Chimps and Bees Do It, But Is Democracy Natural?

Nature metaphors speak of top dogs, queen bees and kings of the jungle, but not many senators of the savannah are voter bees. Our own democratic system may be rooted in the instincts of our ape ancestors. But how natural is it?
