Naked Fans & Tacks - 2012 Tour de France

This year’s Tour de France is the 99th. The first race was held in 1903.

It was initially planned as a five-stage race from 31 May to 5 July, starting in Paris and stopping in Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and Nantes before returning to Paris.

Sixty cyclists pedalled out of Paris suburb for a 1,509-mile ride and a legendary sporting event was born. This epic journey has come to be seen as a great exploration and one that pushes an athlete as far as he can go mentally and physically.

This year proved to be an exciting year full of surprises and even horrific crashes and tacks on the road. The following is a look at some iconic images from this year’s race which concludes Sunday, July 22.
